Web Page Design
Since the advent of the internet many new jobs have appeared. A large number of these jobs are maintenance work, updating sites and managing forums. Web page designers have a creative role on the internet, designing and coding pages to be viewed online.
Web page design can provide an interesting and fulfilling career. It is also a perfect job to do from home with good opportunities for career development. If you would like to find out what skills it takes to become a web page designer the
following article provides a brief overview.
Entry Requirements
To start work as a web page designer you need to have a good eye for design and also be technically minded. Web page designers create bespoke webpage designs for individuals and companies that are then coded to appear on internet browsers.
In order to perform this role candidates need to have an extensive knowledge of design packages such as paint shop. Knowledge of dreamweaver or programs for coding websites is desired though not essential with all positions. Some web page development outfits have teams to design the look of the page and separate teams to code them.
If you are looking to start your own company it is advisable to start doing one off jobs and build up a base of customers before setting up on your own. If you are joining an existing company and are intending to work from home you will still go through the interview process as usual. Employers will usually want to see some of your previous designs. Candidates should either take a portfolio of work to the interview or have a live website ready to demonstrate.
Daily Work
The course focuses on improving touch typing techniques by setting exercises and examples for the user to follow. As well as teaching techniques for mastering the numerical keys the course continues with the other symbols and characters that are commonly used.
Web page designers spend the bulk of their working day contacting clients and designing the appearance of websites. As
well as a thorough knowledge of computers and computing technology you will need to have good customer and communication skills.
Designers will have initial contact with the client where they will discuss the form and function of the website. After this first meeting the designer will then start designing the look of the website; organising text, images and links as required. The designer will also be responsible for collecting material for the site such as photos, music, text and anything else required.
Whilst working, you will need to manage your own workload. You may have deadlines to stick to and the responsibility will be yours to regularly communicate and (if necessary) meet with clients to discuss changes and ideas for their site. Depending on where you live you may need a car to travel to meet customers or possibly hire office space to provide a place for clients to drop in.
Career Prospects
With the ongoing success of the internet and new enterprise, web page designers are set for a stable outlook for some time. If you are starting out as a sole trader running a self employed business you may be able to expand your company overtime and take on new designers. If you build up experience of working on your own you may be able to transfer to an office job and continue to design or land a managerial position. If you live in a large area you should be able to find new clients to complete one off jobs for. If you live in a remote area it is recommended to find clients who require more complex sites which require regular maintenance.
